You can add terms to Transifex by uploading a CSV file. Use the file to create a new Glossary or to update an existing one. You can also upload the Import file from a Glossary suggestions download, which is already in this format.
Format your CSV file
To make sure your Glossary data maps correctly to Transifex, structure your CSV file as shown below. This example imports successfully:
term | pos | notes | is_case_sensitive | translation_el | translation_pt_br |
Translation | noun | The process of translating text from one language into another | FALSE | μετάφραση | tradução |
The sample below shows every supported attribute.
The first row of your CSV file must contain the headers: term, pos, notes, is_case_sensitive, translation_<language code>, and notes_<language code>. The pos, notes, and is_case_sensitive columns are optional. The only required columns are term and at least one translation_<language code> column.
Here's what each column means:
term: The word or phrase you're adding to the Glossary. The term must be in the source language of the project or projects that use the Glossary.
pos: Part of speech. Accepted values are noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, adverb, preposition, conjunction, and interjection. This column is optional.
notes: Any notes about the source term. This column is optional.
is_case_sensitive: Whether the term is case-sensitive. Values such as true, TRUE, yes, y, and YES are accepted. If you leave out this column, the term is not case-sensitive.
translation_<language code>: The translation of the term in that language. Every value in this column must be in the same language. The header is the word "translation_" followed by the language code of the translation. For example, French istranslation_fr, and French (France) istranslation_fr_FR.notes_<language code>: Notes for the term in that target language. Use the same language code as the matching translation column.
Add more columns with a language code in the header to include translations for other languages. To add several variants of a term or its translation, separate the entries with a double pipe (||).
Terms that contain a comma, such as "Transifex Live, a Transifex solution", are fine if you create or update the Glossary from Google Spreadsheets. If a field contains a comma or a double quote, enclose the field in double quotes. Double each double quote inside the field.
Once imported, the term looks like this inside Transifex:
📝 Note: Only words that match a Glossary term are highlighted in the Editor. For example, if the Glossary term is "Translation", the source string "Translation" is highlighted. If the Glossary term is "Translations" (plural), the source string is not highlighted because it doesn't match the term.
Use the correct encoding
Save the file as UTF-8. Excel can export UTF-8 CSV files, but it's hard to confirm that it did. To check, open the file in a text editor that shows the encoding and confirm the characters look correct (e.g., VS Code).
The most reliable option is Google Spreadsheets, which exports UTF-8 CSV files correctly. If you have an Excel file, open it in Google Spreadsheets and export it as a CSV.
This also fixes uploads that fail with the message "new-line character seen in unquoted field - do you need to open the file in universal-newline mode".
Duplicate terms in your CSV file
Upload fails if the same term appears twice in your CSV file with the same part of speech (pos). Resolve the duplicate and upload the file again. To give a term more than one translation, use variants separated by || instead of a second row.
Upload your CSV file
To create a new Glossary from your CSV file:
Click Glossaries in the main navigation.
Click Add glossary near the top right.
In the popup, enter a name and select the source language of the Glossary terms. The source language should match your project's source language. For example, if your project uses English (United States), select English (United States), not generic English.
Choose the CSV file from your computer.
Click Save to create the Glossary.
After you create the Glossary, associate a project with it.
Checklist for a successful upload
Check the following before you upload:
The file is saved as UTF-8.
The file has no duplicate terms with the same part of speech.
The file has the required columns: term, and at least one translation column. See the column list above.
The language codes in the headers match your project's source and target languages.
You select the same source language in the upload popup as your project's source language.
You don't need to upload the same Glossary once per language. Add a column for each target language in the same file.
The Glossary is associated with your project or projects.
Update an existing Glossary
You can also update a Glossary with a CSV file.
To update a Glossary:
Click Glossaries in the main navigation.
Find the Glossary you want to update. Click the three-dots icon, then click Edit glossary.
Choose the CSV file from your computer.
To update existing terms and add new ones from your CSV file, select Overwrite existing entries.
Click Save to update the Glossary.
